Flexibility is defined as "the ability to change or be changed easily according to the situation".
Everyday we are faced with schedules, invitations, events, regular to-dos, projects, phone calls, planning, coordinating, drama, chaos, etc. It's so nice when we make a plan and all goes well and according to our schedule right?
I usually hear clients and our team say, "that was a really good day" when all of the appointments go or went as planned, things got checked off the to-do lists, no one forgot about a meeting or made it on time to their appointment, etc.
Other days I hear, "I cannot make this damn meeting", "I am so sorry about the reschedule" or "things aren't ready when you said they would be" and so many other times when things just aren't flowing as we all hope they would.
Hope is a plan, ability is a desire.
I have an ability to be flexible, compassionate, understanding and so do you.
I have a hope to meet all of that has been set and it's likely that you do too.
I mean seriously we all hope(plan). Just how many times do things work out a little different than we hoped?
Do either mean that we are failures, inconsiderate, selfish when they don't happen?
Do either mean that when you react to the text and say things to yourself "well how selfish", "I've been waiting I mean they could have called", etc. that you aren't compassionate?
Neither make us right or wrong. It makes us human. Flexibility offers a softer side, an ability to change our limited beliefs , such as, "late people are selfish people" or "slow to pay" means you lie, steal, or don't pay your bills. Limiting beliefs go deep, far, and wide. Being flexible is an ability which means that you get to choose. You must be deliberate about it though.
I choose to be a little less rigid. I know that each day someone appreciates the grace and understanding.
We all have the ability to be more flexible and that is where you get to become less salty and more happy. Don't take on their stress, don't add stress because things didn't work out the way you thought(planned), especially when it comes to your goals and plans.
I will never forget the time that I had received a budget for corrections a fifth time. I had my entire day planned to the 15 minutes because that's what I learned (take care of the minutes and the hours take care of themselves). On the 5th time I yelled at the poor woman who was just doing her job because I was so fixed on my timeline and had zero wiggle room with the overloaded schedule to be flexible.
I had the ability to change and I did. Never did I treat another person like that again and I apologized. Stress makes us more salty than we desire to be. An overbooked, rigid, high expectations of self and others often does not leave space for the ability to become more flexible.
